Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine (as seen on any number of book blogs but that I specifically borrowed from The Candid Cover) that showcases upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating. Here at Completely Booked, this week’s pick for Waiting on Wednesday is:
Title: Stalking Jack the Ripper
Author: Kerri Maniscalo
Publisher: Jimmy Patterson
Publication Date: September 20, 2016
Summary (From Goodreads): Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord’s daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.
Against her stern father’s wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle’s laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.
The story’s shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this dazzling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.
Thoughts: I love the idea of this story. One of my favorite tropes in historical fiction is girls not doing as their told in order to pursue interests in fields of study dominated by men (I go to a women’s college, it’s kind of our thing). Stalking Jack the Ripper has forensic science. As a connoisseur of shows like Forensic Files, CSI, Law and Order and an avid listener of podcasts like My Favorite Murder (which I definitely recommend), I love, love, love forensic science and Jack the Ripper is one of the best unsolved murder cases in history. I am so excited for this book. I hope it’s everything I want and more.
