Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine (as seen on any number of book blogs but that I specifically borrowed from The Candid Cover) that showcases upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating. Here at Completely Booked, this week’s pick for Waiting on Wednesday is:
Title: Labyrinth Lost (Brookly Brujas #1)
Author: Zoraida Córdova
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Publication Date: September 6, 2016
Summary (From Goodreads): Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.
Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can’t trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.
The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland…
Thoughts: Truth be told, you can never have to many books about witches. Well, I can’t at least, especially since this one promises to be so different from other witch books I’ve read before. I added this to my TBR back before the was even a cover for it. Speaking of the cover, look at how beautiful it is. I am absolutely in love with it. I’ve been trying to read more diverse books and though YA is getting better, there is still a long way to go, but I think books like this are going in the right directions. From the blurbs, especially the ones written by Danielle Paige and Daniel José Older, and even some of the early reviews from other reviewers, I think that this book, which offers a twist on world-building, magic and other tropes so often seen in YA will give a fresh start to witch stories and I can’t wait to read it when it comes out next month.
