Beautiful People // August – Appearance Edition

Beautiful People.png

I am both very nervous and excited to take part in the Beautiful People meme, which is hosted by Cait @ Paper Fury and Sky @ Further Up and Further In. It is a meme that allows writers (A) to help you get to know your characters better, and (B) share with us about your writing projects! I’ve never done this before and in fact, I had only found out about this meme thanks to the lovely Grace @ Mint Novels who led me to it. I had a little trouble deciding which character from the two projects I’ve been working on would be the best to write about so I may end up doing this twice, but I think for now, I’ll probably write about Simone “Mori” Moreau, the main character in my urban fantasy story that is currently nameless.

Give a brief overview of their looks. / Share a snippet that involves description of their appearance.

I know that these are not the same model. I just liked both of these pictures as a sort of character inspiration for Mori. Somewhere between these two pictures is probably the closest I could find to how I envision Mori looking (I have no clue who these models are, so if you know, you should let me know, because they’re gorgeous and I love them for character inspiration), but there are a few differences.

Mori is of average height or a little bit taller, standing somewhere between 5’6 – 5’7. She’s light skinned with a fair complexion (“light brown skin with warm golden undertones”) and a face covered in freckles. She has a round to heart shaped face with a dimpled chin, almond shaped hazel eyes, an upturned nose, and full lips. Her reddish brown (auburn) hair reaches down to her mid-back in a mass of thick, tight curls and her eyebrows are always kept in perfect, neat arches. Mori isn’t exactly curvy, but her body is feminine. She’s got long legs, slight curves and an athletic body from dancing, swimming and general training for her performances.

What is the first thing people might notice about them?

The first thing people probably notice about Mori is her freckles, more often than not. She’s very proud of them and though it took her forever to accept them, she loves them because they make her unique. Other people might be interested in her long legs or her hazel eyes, but the freckles are fairly obvious.

What are their unique features?

Well, as was mentioned above, Mori has freckles all over her face, as well as some other parts of her body. She has a bit of an overbite that’s noticeable when she smiles and fairly thick eyebrows. She also has a long scar that covers most of her chest. She covers it with make-up during performances. She also has a couple of tattoos: one on her right shoulder-blade of three roses, a right wrist tattoo of Ursa Major, and a tattoo of of a compass rose on her ankle.

How tall are they? What is their build?

Mori stands somewhere between 5’6 and 5’7, so I’ll say maybe 5’6 1/2. She has a slender build, but she is in no way boyish. Maybe, she’d be considered more athletic than anything else. She is feminine and has some curves but nothing more than average.

What is their posture like? How do they usually carry themselves?

Mori has fairly good posture. She doesn’t slouch too much and tries to carry herself as confident, even when she really isn’t. It comes in handy that she’s a performer as it gives her practice carrying herself in a way that isn’t really her. It gives her practice having more confidence than she really does.

Your character has been seen on a “lazy day” (free from usual routine/expectations): what are they wearing and how do they look?

She looks comfortable and, for the most part, feminine. Mori wears clothes that fit her well and even on her laziest day, she still gets out of bed and puts on nice fitting jeans and t-shirts or even just yoga pants and a tank top. She also likes dresses, be it long maxi dresses or cute sundresses.

Do they wear glasses, accessories, or jewelry on a regular basis? Do they have any article of clothing or accessory that could be considered their trademark?

Technically Mori does wear glasses, but she’s been wearing contacts for the last few years. She likes to accessorize and wear jewelry, but sometimes she opts to go without it. Mori often wears an opal ring on a chain around her neck, which was given to her by her mother. She considers it to be her prized possession.

Have they ever been bullied or shamed because of their looks? Explain!

Her hair was the main source of bullying for awhile, plus she constantly had to deal with people touching it without permission. She’d wanted to cut it off for most of her life but her mother wouldn’t let her. Later on when she was finally able to, she hated it and vowed to never cut it ever again. Her freckles were another source of shame for her, mostly because other kids would often make fun of her for them and none of her sisters had freckles, nor did her mother who Mori had always idolized.

Are they happy with how they look? If they could change anything about their appearance, what would it be?

Now, Mori is definitely more content with her appearance than she used to be. She’s maybe not super happy with her nose, but never enough to want to make any major changes.

This was definitely more for me than anything else and this character is going through a number of changes even now as I write this. I do think her basic appearance will stay the same.

Have you taken part in the Beautiful People meme? Leave your links in the comments and I’ll check them out. And if you haven’t, post you should join the link-up over at Paper Fury.

Don’t forget to tell me what you think about Mori, like I said, I’m still fine-tuning her but any advice you have would be nice.
